Day 79 Slow Day Waiting on Northwest Wind to Ease Up

Image
Last year Christmas with Ami!    Ali laying on clean laundry.  Today was a bit of a slow day. We took the dinghy into Governors Harbor and did some laundry. Then we ate at the “fast food “restaurant. Literally, that was the name of the restaurant. I think we were her only customers this day. And we interrupted her crossword puzzle to cook us a burger. We had quite a sporty dinghy ride  back to Methuselah with clean laundry. I had to go extra extra slow to prevent salt spray from getting on our clean laundry. We had a nice walk on the beach and watched a “2025 year in review”, and we reflected on our year together, and remembered our beloved sheltie, Ami!

Day 78 Walk Through Governor’s Harbour 2nd Time

Image
Adjusting anchor chain to point Methuselah into the swells (to prevent side-to-side swaying).  Jessica and I went into Governors Harbor this morning and had brunch at the café. We walked around the town and checked out the laundromat for tomorrow. We visited the grocery store and it was super crowded because the weekly supply boat arrived today so the staff was stocking shelves and the aisles that are very narrow were clogged with customers and staff. The wind picked up while we were grocery shopping so it was a rough ride back to Methuselah on the dinghy. We went to the beach for a while and got a small squall rainstorm while we were at the beach so we rushed back and of course it stopped raining right when we got to Methuselah. We had a nice salmon dinner and now we are chilling out and enjoying each other’s company.

Day 77 beach fire at Governor’s Harbour

Image
Moon setting.  Well, Rock Sound was not hitting on too much, so we decided not even to wait for the shipment of fresh vegetables to be delivered and headed back north to Governors Harbor, as a first step to meet Jason in    a week.    I changed the oil in the diesel engine, transmission, and Honda generator. I finally got the battery charger configuration set to get a 100% charge which had been 40 days….the refrigerator and Starlink Internet service are our biggest energy hogs. Now we are all set for keeping the batteries topped off every day with the generator. We collected some water from the town spicket and Jessica cleaned some conch shells with a wire brush that we had found. We have found that the queen conch shells are absolutely beautiful for a couple weeks, but then you need to keep them out of the sun to prevent bleaching of the bright pink, white, and red colors. Then we made a fire on the beach and reminisced about our trip so far. We both agr...

Day 76 Cathedral caves

Image
Trying to keep my shorts dry before the hike..  After a few boat chores in the morning, Jessica and I bushwhacked through a primitive trail to find the cathedral caves. Jessica indeed went in because she could see light the whole time (since Jessica gets claustrophobic sometimes).    We saw a blue hole that rises and falls with the tides because it is filled with ocean water through caves.    We strolled around town in rock sound settlement. We discovered that the supply ship with fresh vegetables comes on Tuesday so we will wait and go grocery shopping then.    We have seen plenty of dogs, cats, chickens, lizards, pigs, and dolphins. And today we saw goats on the road…..We were sure to keep Ali far away.    We attempted to get a conk salad, but the conch guy did not show up today.    We have learned that everyone is on island time and stores are open occasionally throughout the day. However, everything is closed on Sundays, ...

Day 75 dolphins, dolphins, and more dolphins

Image
Look at Jessica’s facial expression!  Primary School We left Governors Harbor and made a pitstop at Tarpon Bay. On the way, we were looking at the bottom 30 feet down and we talked about how cool it would be if we were able to see some sharks or dolphins since it was absolutely flat and no waves to impede our view of the water. In the blink of an eye, the dolphins appeared. They loved to ride in the bow wake. Hopefully the pictures and videos will speak for themselves. Jessica was ecstatic and almost started crying because it was such an unbelievable site to see. Instead of steaming ahead, I kept circling Methuselah back toward the pod of dolphins and they would always come back to the bow and pose for pictures.

Day 74 Snorkel and Beach Fish Fry

Image
Look at the electrical connections. stop sign not before intersection.  This morning Jessica and I strolled around cupid‘s cay, where we saw the very first jail in the Bahamas. Then we strolled around Governors Harbor (and saw an 8ft shark - from land) before it got too hot.    We came back to the boat to grab some lunch then we went on a snorkel where we saw Blue Hamlets, Barracuda, Nassau Grouper, Lion Fish, Pompano, Bar Jacks, Porkfish, Butterfly Fish, Queen Angelfish, French Angel fish, Sargent Majors, Rainbow Parrortfish, Cowfish,    and Moon Jellyfish. We had heard about the Friday night fish fry and party on the beach for a week now so we decided to give it a shot. We thoroughly enjoyed the fried fish and barbecued chicken cooked by the locals on the BBQ over driftwood on the beach.    Somehow I made it out to the dance floor, i.e. street to dance to traditional Bahamian music (but eventually they played YMCA). Tomorrow we plan to sail fu...

Day 73 Christmas Day on Anchor

Image
Merry Christmas to our friends and family that are reading this!!!    We started the day with a delicious breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns.    We went for a snorkel today and saw a stingray, more reef fish, a school of barracudas, and thousands of jellyfish.    They had these electrical lights running down the veins on the edges of the jellyfish. And luckily they were not the stinging kind because they were rubbing against our chin and face.    We talked to some of our family on the phone, and prepared a Christmas dinner for the two of us.    I read aloud from the New Testament in Mathew and Luke about Jesus‘s birth, the whole reason for the season!

Day 72 Chilling at Governor’s Harbour

Image
Town water spigot. This morning, I made a run to get 5 gallons of gas in a Jerry can, and water    from the town spigot.    Jessica had a nice talk with her Mom and wished her a merry Christmas. Then we went into town at Governors Harbor and walked around a bit. I found a cell phone store and bought a SIM card so that we can navigate while walking in towns away from the Starlink on the boat. Jessica bought a dress with her birthday money from my Mom and Dad . Then we were looking for a certain restaurant to eat lunch at from the Google map and Google said we were at the restaurant. I turned around and sure enough the food truck that was providing shade so I could see my phone was indeed the    restaurant!    We got cracked chicken, french fries, and corn and rice. It was delicious.    No frills, very Bahemian, you just kind of get whatever they have that day. No menus… which was all just fine with us. Talked to an old man whose da...
