Day 90 One Fish….Two Fish - Mahi and Wahoo
Woke up at the Cape Eleuthera Marina and the dockmaster warned us to keep Ali away from the water because 10 foot bull sharks prowl for fish scraps. We sailed across the Exuma sound and the fishing rod went off midway across. The screaming clicker sound on the reel got the hair standing up on the back of my neck. Then we saw the mahi jump out of the water a few times and showed off his bright green, yellow and fluorescent blue colors. The bull mahi even swam straight at the boat once so I thought for sure I had lost him when the tension went slack. Somehow, another after a 30 minute battle, I was able to lean over far enough to gaff they bull mahi. We continued toward the Exuma’s and Jessica and I looked behind Methuselah and saw a wahoo this time striking at the lure. On the third attempt, the wahoo hooked up and again it was a screaming real sound. I put Methuselah in neutral and slowly worked the wahoo to the boat. This time we boated the fish on the bow to prevent the cockpit from being a bloodbath and from protecting Ali from the thrashing fish. We anchored in the Exuma Land and Sea Park, and right before Jessica wanted to jump in the water, because it was a balmy 91.6 F (up from 83), and we saw two 8 foot nurse sharks. Yes, they are docile, but it is a little unnerving to jump in the water on top of shark so we waited a bit and then went for a swim. The water is like looking through aior, it is so clear, absolutely unbelievable!

Wow ! What a thrilling event for you guys. You can enjoy some delicious meals in the days to come…Dad
ReplyDeleteOh the awesome Exumas! The pictures are amazing. And that Mahi you caught—I do believe Ray caught his ancestor in those same waters 40 years ago! (-: Put the sail covers on and stay awhile.
