Day 139 Arrival in Great Harbor Cay Marina for a week stay, and a Bull Shark!

12’ Bull Shark circled named “The Harbour Master”.

We left our anchorage at first light to take advantage of the slack tide in the inlet. We rounded the top of the Berry Islands and went by the Norwegian cruise ship and Royal Caribbean cruise ships. They each have their own private island, complete with amusement park, zip, lines, waterpark, etc. it looked really fancy on those cruise ships as we passe by, but it seemed like the farthest thing from true Bahamian culture.  But Jessica enjoyed waving at the few passengers that were on their balcony that did not do their cruise ship  excursion on land today. We made our way into Great Harbor Cay Marina, where we have a slip reserved for one week. After so many months of anchoring out, we thought we would do something a little different, and there is a windy period coming so it will be nice to be in a slip. They have bicycles that we can use, hot showers, a trash dumpster (quite the luxary), all the water we can use ($0.50

cents per gallon) a restaurant 30 feet from our slip, electricity for air-conditioning because it is hot and stuffy in the marina compared to being anchored out.  There are quite a few locals here that bring fish in and clean them right here on the dock. They throw the fish scraps into the water. Black tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, and the infamous bull shark made a presence today. The 12 foot bull shark is named, the Harbour Master, by the locals. Jessica  also spotted two manatees.  We went on a bike ride and explored a little bit of the island. We each took a nice long shower at the bathhouse and enjoyed leaving the water running while we lathered up. I put some conditioner in my hair and read the instructions that said to leave it in for 1 to 3 minutes, but I chose 10 minutes….. quite a luxury to not have to turn the water off to conserve while lathering up!

  1. 10 minutes of conditioner…a well deserved treat!
