Day 144 Estuary Flats Exploring and Marina BBQ
My new favorite picture.
Jessica and I woke up early to take advantage of the morning high tide so that there would be enough water to take a long dinghy ride through the estuary shallow flats behind the Berry Islands. Jessica was willing to put her coffee in a travel mug so that we could get going early. First, we entered the backside of shark creek and slowly meandered through the mangroves where we saw turtles feeding on the grass. Next, we found a sandbar and flats area that cut through to the ocean side. We found a small island and took in the beauty as we made sand castles with sand that was so fine that it actually reminded us of powder snow. Next, we found an abandoned drug house from the 1980s. The concrete ramp to hoist the sea planes out of the water, was still in good shape, but the drug house was in such ruins that we chose to not even go inside. The marina hosted a barbecue get together. We sat on the picnic table and listen to live music from other cruisers and talked at length with a couple from Mount Airy, NC. It was nice to share stories with other cruisers, some beginning their journey, and some ending their journey (like us) in the Bahamas.
